The first order of business when you get up in the morning is to catch some urine in a small, clean container. Test the pH of the fluid with the pH test paper. When the paper is wet, the change in color should be obvious, if it isn’t obvious, you may need pH paper designed to register at a lower pH range. Compare the color of the paper with the colors shown on the gauge that comes with the paper, and record the pH number on the Health Profile Monitoring Chart. Ideally, you should check your urine pH after you have slept nonstop for at least five hours and your body has had a chance to do some internal house cleaning.
If your sleep is interrupted, take the reading after the longest period of uninterrupted sleep, even if it’s three o’clock in the morning. Also record how long you slept. Over time, as your health improves and your pH numbers get better, you will find that you are sleeping more soundly for longer periods. Of course, if children are waking you during the night, your diet won’t have much effect on their sleeping habits—but their diets will. Children really benefit from improved eating habits. To establish your pH baseline, check your urine pH first thing in the morning after you have eaten the foods you customarily eat the night before. That’s all there is to checking urine pH—once in the morning, and the first time establishes your baseline.
In order to get a clear picture of your level of health after you have established your baseline, eat only acid ash foods for two days. The purpose of dumping acid ash foods into your system is to set up a temporary “worst case scenario” for your body to handle in order to get the most reliable research results. The “worst case” for your body is to deny it any of the materials it needs to process and dispose of the acid generated by an excessive amount of protein. For two days, you contrive to give your body only a heavy load of protein. Foods such as steak, or its less grand protein-rich cousins, hamburger, chicken, fish, or macaroni and cheese leave acid ash.
You may have noticed that you are rather thirsty when you eat high-protein meals. During the monitoring period, drink only water. If you must have coffee, tea, or soft drinks, limits your consumption to two cups or less each day. Although you don’t want to inflict high-protein abuse on your body frequently, it can tolerate it for a couple of days. The extreme conditions provide the best setting to determine how your overall health is holding up.
